I'll never cease to be amazed that you run a 1X7 or 1X8 setup or whatever without a chain guide of some sort up front..must work though I suppose, else it wouldn't be there.

it works, or it worked well enough (that's an old picture, and now I'm all single speeds at least in this zip code). The occasional dropped chain keeps you on your toes or on your face. A little wake up call once in while, a tangible reminder of the good old days when chain tension was proper and cassettes were as new as the chainrings and there was no double sharkfin flip flopping. But most of the time I was just riding slowly on the sidewalk between 1111 and 1201.
