deja vu

July 23, 2026

Orange you glad I reposted this shot of spilled paint on Cowlitz Road from July of 2020. Don’t cry over spilled paint. Take another look. Take a closer look. Take a picture. It’ll last longer. And when you’re digging through the archives for an old photo you might stumble upon seven other old photos you forgot about.

It’s not some subtle feeling. Some barely perceptible sense of deja vu. (Dionne Warwick not Olivia Rodrigo) It’s a been-there—done-that confident feeling. Not just a monotonous treadmill repetitious work-a-day slog.  But a confidence gained through experience. A confidence that’s visible in body language, approach, stance and follow through.

The other day I screened a few more orange tags. Then I found a photo of the first batch. That’s when I noticed the first ones were cleaner. I took some more time on those ones and wedged the “orange” neatly under the grommet, instead of over the grommet. The devil is in the details. Six of one. Half dozen the other. Hand made in Rainier Beach. Mistakes are signs of authenticity. One of a kind. One at a time.

Another other other day. An AD tote bag arrived on special delivery from Dr. 37 Mike in the 98225. I asked if he’d like me to screen it for him, and he said I can pass it on to someone worthy. So I inverted and multiplied. This time in black paint. But it recalls the amethyst tote I screened a couple months back.
