This book found me in the free library. When I read the story line I thought: double-debbie-downer and I almost put it right back. But I hung on to it for several weeks and when I finally started reading it, I was all in, plowing through in a day or two. My attention span has dwindled to nothingness recently. A book has to really get to me to get me to stick with it.
It’s very well written, from 5-year old Jack’s perspective, with his vocabulary, phrasing and sentence structure. Spot on.
ROOM was published 16 years ago and the major motion picture came out a few years after that. The story line is a bummer but it ends up OK.
This is fiction but Donoghue says she was inspired by the true story of the Fritzl family in Austria. When I started to learn more about that family, it made me pause for a moment. That true story is truly Double-Debbie-Downer. So fucked up.
