The other other day I mailed a postcard from the Mothership to a residential address in the U-district. It took nine days to arrive. Nine days to travel 1.3 miles. That’s 6,864 feet. That’s a 7 minute bike ride or a 20 minute stroll. Travelling within the same zipcode.
My postcard was not postmarked for seven days. But when it was finally processed, it was delivered two days later. Two days sounds about right for a delivery like this by the USPS.
I’m not sure where the postcard sat for seven days. In some twilight zone purgatorial holding pen perhaps.
I deliver mail for a living and I find this somewhere between comical and frustrating. I used to deliver legal documents on an old steel bike, in 30 minutes or less. Often travelling more than 1.3 miles from Graham & Dunn to the King County Courthouse.
Yesterday I mailed these two tall can postcards. Upcycled from an 18-pack of 16oz cans that I gifted myself for Father’s Day. One card is on its way down to Rip City. The other is travelling up to Canadian Tijuana Whatcom County. We’ll see how long their journeys take.
